Comic Book Grading Guide

Comic book grading tells you what condition a book is in before you buy, sell, or trade. At Southern California Comics in San Diego, we grade raw books every day. This guide covers the terms you will see on price tags, in listings, and during in-store conversations.

Understanding the 10-Point Scale

Most dealers use a scale from 0.5 (Poor) to 10.0 (Gem Mint). Everyday shopping usually falls between 4.0 and 9.4. Here are the grades you will hear most often:

  1. Near Mint (NM, 9.2 to 9.8): Sharp corners, bright cover, almost no visible wear. Common for recent purchases kept in bags.
  2. Very Fine (VF, 7.5 to 9.0): Light spine stress or a small color break. Still an attractive copy for most collectors.
  3. Fine (FN, 6.0 to 7.0): Moderate wear, minor creases, or light soiling. The book is complete with no missing pages.
  4. Very Good (VG, 4.0 to 5.5): Noticeable creasing, rounded corners, or small tears. Still readable and often affordable for filling runs.
  5. Good (GD, 2.0 to 3.5): Heavy wear, writing, or tape. Story pages are intact but the cover shows significant age.

Common Defects That Lower a Grade

Graders look at the whole book, not just the cover image. Spine ticks from opening, color-breaking creases, rusted staples, subscription creases, and detached covers all drop the grade. For older Gold and Silver Age books, page quality matters too. Brittle or chipped pages can limit how high a copy grades even when the cover looks strong.

Slabbed vs. Raw Comic Books

A slabbed book has been sealed and graded by a third-party company such as CGC or CBCS. The label on the case states the numeric grade and any special notes, like restored pages or missing coupons. Raw books are graded in hand. Slabbed copies trade at a premium because the grade is certified. Raw copies cost less but require you to judge condition yourself or trust your dealer.

Buying, Selling, and Getting a Second Opinion

Grading is part art and part standard. Two experienced graders may disagree by half a point on a borderline copy. When you are unsure, bring the book in.
