How to Sell a Comic Collection Without Getting Burned
Published October 12, 2026 | Back to the Blog

People call the shop after a parent passes, a move, or a closet clean-out and ask the same thing: what do I do with all of these comics? The right plan depends on what you own, but the first steps are the same for almost everyone.
Step 1: Take Stock Before You Call Anyone
Do not sort by guesswork. Write down titles and issue numbers, or take clear photos of each stack. Note anything older than 1980, any first issues, and any book that looks unusually clean or unusually damaged. A short list lets a buyer tell you quickly whether a visit is worthwhile.
Step 2: Know How Dealers Think
Most collections are mostly modern books from the 1990s and later, and those sell in bulk or as part of a lot. Older Gold, Silver, and Bronze Age books are where a collection's value tends to sit. Condition matters on all of them. Fresh bags and boards help, but do not clean, press, or repair anything yourself. Amateur fixes lower value.
Step 3: Get More Than One Opinion
Compare offers from a local shop, a convention dealer, and an online option if the collection suits it. Ask each buyer how they arrived at the number. A reputable buyer explains the difference between what they pay and what a book might sell for later, because they carry the cost of inventory and risk.
Step 4: Understand Appraisals
An appraisal for sale purposes is different from one for insurance or a court. At Southern California Comics, collections are looked at by appointment. If we buy, the appraisal fee is waived. Larger or older collections may take longer to examine and may carry a fee if you decide not to sell. Details are on our Sell Your Books page.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Selling the best books first and leaving the rest, which lowers the value of what remains.
- Grading everything before selling. Fees add up and many books will not earn them back. See is CGC grading worth it.
- Accepting the first offer without a written breakdown.
- Shipping valuable books in a thin envelope. Use boards and a rigid box.
What to Bring or Send
Bring the whole collection if you can, including the odd magazines, toys, or art tucked in with the comics. We also take other items, which you can see on the Other Collectibles page. Email [email protected] with your list or photos and we will tell you what makes sense as a next step.
